Motherhood and weight loss are gifts that enrich your life in countless ways, but even the most beautiful milestones can have downsides. The changes your body experiences during these events can be significant and lasting. Even if you’ve worked hard on your health by eating well and exercising, you may be left with stretched-out muscles, stubborn fat and sagging skin that make it difficult to celebrate your progress.

The midsection is often one of the first areas to show signs of weight gain, and for many of us, it’s also one of the hardest to change. Factors beyond our control affect where and how we carry fat, the elasticity of our skin, how our muscles respond to exercise and our dietary needs. You may be the healthiest you’ve ever been, yet still struggle with excess abdominal fat and skin due to these invisible influences. A tummy tuck with Dr. Catherine Haywood of Brampton. Plastic Surgery directly targets the concerns that stand between you and a body you love.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, can help you achieve the body you dream of, even when life has made it difficult through diet and exercise alone. The procedure addresses three of the most common concerns in the abdominal area: unwanted fat, loose skin and weakened muscles. It can also help with removing stretch marks located below the belly button.

Tummy tucks are one of the most requested procedures performed by plastic surgeons. They have helped numerous women and men in Ontario and worldwide reclaim their comfort and confidence. Dr. Haywood is up to date with the latest abdominoplasty techniques that offer better results with increased patient safety and a more pleasant recovery.

What Can A Tummy Tuck Do?

Every abdominoplasty procedure is tailored to the patient. Depending on your needs, a tummy tuck can help by:

  • Removing stubborn fat from your midsection
  • Flattening a protruding belly “pooch”
  • Eliminating loose, stretched or hanging skin
  • Improving waistline definition
  • Removing stretch marks
  • Tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles
  • Sculpting a firmer, flatter and more defined abdomen
  • Improving the fit of clothing
  • Restoring your pre-baby figure
  • Putting the refining touches on your weight loss journey
  • Giving you lasting results and a renewed sense of confidence

Are There Different Types of Tummy Tucks?

Abdominoplasty surgeries come in different varieties to address different needs. Dr. Haywood will help you choose the one that will achieve your goals with the least scarring and the most natural-looking results. The two most common options are the traditional or full tummy tuck and the mini tummy tuck.

What Is a Full Tummy Tuck?

A full tummy tuck targets the entire midsection by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles in the abdominal wall. This requires an incision across the lower abdomen from hip bone to hip bone and repositioning of the belly button. A full tummy tuck is ideal for women and men who want a dramatically tighter contour for their waist and abdomen, especially if they require muscle repair.

What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive type of abdominoplasty. It focuses on a smaller treatment area below the navel, requires a shorter scar and does not involve repositioning of the belly button. The mini technique can be advantageous for patients who are interested in reduced recovery time and scarring if they do not have a significant amount of loose skin and excess fat and do not require muscle repair.

Who Is Considered a Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Anyone who struggles with extra skin, persistent fat, muscle laxity or low-belly stretch marks despite a healthy lifestyle may find themselves considering a tummy tuck procedure. Many of our Brampton tummy tuck patients are mothers who have lost abdominal tone as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. Abdominoplasty is also popular with women and men who have gained and lost a significant amount of weight.

An ideal candidate for this procedure is someone who:

  • Has reached a stable, healthy weight
  • Has no underlying health issues that could make surgery unsafe
  • Is a non-smoker or willing to quit before surgery
  • Has realistic expectations in terms of results

Many patients pursue tummy tuck surgery because they are unhappy with the appearance of their midsection. Others have functional concerns that affect their health as well as the appearance of their abdomen, such as abdominal muscle separation or a hernia. Your abdominoplasty journey will begin with a consultation with Dr. Haywood, who will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Haywood will talk to you about your goals, gather a detailed medical history and conduct an examination to rule out any contraindications for surgery. She will also use this information to recommend which type of abdominoplasty will be best for you. Think of Dr. Haywood as your partner through this process. She understands that undergoing a surgical procedure can be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding, and she will be there as your advocate every step of the way.

On the day of your surgery, the procedure will start with a general anesthetic administered by an anesthesiologist. Dr. Haywood will create an incision on the lower abdomen. For a full tummy tuck, she will also make an incision around the belly button. She will then carefully remove surplus skin and subcutaneous fat tissue. If it’s part of the treatment plan, she will also tighten the abdominal muscles and reposition the navel. Dr. Haywood will finish the procedure by bringing the remaining skin down to create a smoother, firmer abdomen and closing the incisions.

What Is Recovery Like After Tummy Tuck Surgery?

The initial recovery after abdominoplasty is about managing discomfort and adjusting to your new body. Soreness, swelling, bruising and numbness are common and may last for several weeks. Dr. Haywood will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics to keep you comfortable and healthy as the healing process begins.

You may need drains temporarily to reduce the risk of fluid accumulation. If this is part of your recovery plan, Dr. Haywood will explain how to care for your drains and let you know when they will be removed. You will also need to wear a compressive garment that helps reduce swelling and provides support for your midsection during early healing.

Dr. Haywood will make specific recommendations for downtime and activity modifications based on your job requirements and recreational activity level. Patients can generally resume office work within one to two weeks following a tummy tuck and may start exercising six weeks post-operatively.

What Procedures Can Enhance My Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Haywood regularly performs tummy tucks in conjunction with other procedures. Combining complementary procedures can deliver significant body contouring that dramatically improves your figure. Simultaneous surgeries can also be more convenient, more cost-effective and more manageable emotionally than undergoing each procedure individually.

Patients seeking body restoration after pregnancy often choose to combine their tummy tuck with a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation. This combination is commonly referred to as a ‘Mommy Makeover.’

Patients seeking abdominoplasty after weight loss may wish to combine their tummy tuck with body lifting procedures, such as an arm lift (brachioplasty), breast lift or thgh lift. This combination of procedures is sometimes called a full body lift.

Liposuction is frequently paired with abdominoplasty. Liposuction provides additional contouring and fat reduction for the ultimate midsection shape-up. This is a powerful combination for a range of tummy tuck candidates, whether they’re mothers, weight loss patients or simply looking to turn back the hands of time.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck in Ontario Cost?

The total cost of a tummy tuck depends on the degree of correction required. A full tummy tuck or a larger area will take longer to complete and cost more, while a mini tummy tuck or minor adjustments can be performed in a shorter amount of time with a smaller investment. To help you plan for your abdominoplasty, we’ve included cost estimates below. Dr. Haywood will provide a more accurate quote after your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q&A With Dr. Catherine Haywood

Should I lose weight before considering tummy tuck surgery?

Body weight is an important consideration for tummy tuck surgery. It is not a weight-loss procedure, although it can be an exciting and affirming final step of a weight loss journey. Ideally, you should be close to your target weight and looking for a way to address stubborn fat, loose skin and/or weakened muscles that don’t respond to your diet and exercise efforts. For the best long-term results, it is advisable that your weight is stable and healthy for at least six months before surgery.

Does a tummy tuck always include muscle repair?

Many patients benefit from abdominal muscle tightening to restore normal anatomy in cases of muscle separation or to cinch the waistline for better contouring, but it is not always necessary. A full tummy tuck most often includes muscle repair. A mini tummy tuck does not. Abdominoplasty surgery that involves muscle repair requires a longer and more careful recovery.

Can I get pregnant after tummy tuck surgery?

Tummy tuck surgery will not prevent you from getting pregnant or giving birth. However, if you are planning to have children in the future, you may be encouraged to postpone the procedure until you’re done expanding your family. Pregnancy can stretch the tissues out again and they may need to be corrected with a revision surgery.

Will I have a scar after tummy tuck surgery?

It’s understandable to be concerned about scarring, especially when the purpose of the procedure is to improve your confidence in your appearance. Scars are a reality of surgery. The good news is the tummy tuck scar is in a discreet location where it is concealed by most underwear and swimwear. Dr. Haywood will discuss tips for healing and minimizing scarring that you should include in your postoperative routine.

Are tummy tuck results permanent?

Tummy tuck surgery can provide body contour benefits for many years. You’ll enjoy the longest-lasting results if you maintain a stable weight, do not become pregnant, follow a healthy diet and exercise consistently.
