The dialogue around aging has evolved in recent years. Rather than trying to “fight” aging, many are now embracing the natural process and leaning into the idea of aging gracefully. We see what is uniquely beautiful in all stages of life.

But even with this shifting attitude, we still want to feel our best when we look into a mirror. We want to feel confident and optimistic, and see a reflection that accurately represents how vibrant we feel inside. So what can we do when our inner and outer selves don’t match?

Injectable treatments are a quick, minimally-invasive way to slow the effects of aging and enhance your appearance. Brampton Plastic Surgery can help you determine whether you’re a good candidate for cosmetic injectables and help you choose the treatment that’s right for you.

Are There Different Types of Injectables?

There are several different types of injectables, each of which targets facial aging in a distinct way. There are also many brands and products within those larger categories that use various ingredients and manufacturing processes to produce specific results. Depending on the concerns you wish to address, Dr. Haywood may recommend one or more of the following injectables:

Neuromodulators work by relaxing the muscles that form wrinkles when certain expressions are made. Many facial lines develop over the years from repeated muscle contractions when you smile, laugh, squint and frown. When injected directly into the overactive muscle, neuromodulators prevent the muscle from contracting, allowing the overlying skin to relax and smooth out. The most well-known neuromodulator is Botox®.

Botox® can improve the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet in adults. These treatments take about 15 to 30 minutes to administer and about a week before your full results are visible. Results typically last three to four months, and you can receive regular Botox® injections to prevent your wrinkles from returning.

Dermal Fillers

Not all lines on your face result from muscle activity. Some develop as your skin begins to produce less collagen and lose volume and elasticity. Dermal fillers, most notably ones formulated with hyaluronic acid, are designed to temporarily improve moderate to severe wrinkles and folds of this type. They are also used for contouring purposes, such as defining the jawline, sculpting the cheeks and reshaping the nose. Most last six to 12 months, but some can last as long as 18 months.

One of the most popular uses for dermal fillers is lip enhancement. Ideally, lip fillers should be natural, long-lasting and comfortable. We love Belotero® lip fillers for this result. Just as lipstick and lip liner complement each other, Belotero® Lips Shape and Belotero® Lips Contour provide volume and definition for beautiful results. Belotero® Lips Shape is intended for augmenting the upper and lower lip, while Belotero® Lips Contour is designed to define the lip edges.

Volumizers are a special type of filler designed to address severe volume loss. They excel at providing heavy-duty structural support in areas like hollow cheeks, deep nasolabial folds and even the backs of the hands. Volumizers work on two levels. First, they provide instant volume and correction upon injection. Then, over time, they stimulate collagen production for a long-lasting volumizing effect. When your body metabolizes the filler, your natural collagen remains and continues to support your skin.

Radiesse® is a volumizing filler that contains calcium hydroxylapatite as an active ingredient. It is a great filler for deep smile lines, marionette lines, the corners of the mouth and chin wrinkles. It’s also used for hand rejuvenation. After Radiesse® injections, your refreshed appearance can last up to a year or more.

Can Different Types of Injectables Be Combined?

Skin aging takes more than one form, which means that using more than one injectable might give you the best results. This highly customizable approach is sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift.” Using a combination of neuromodulators, hyaluronic acid fillers and/or volumizers, Dr. Haywood can address various concerns and areas of your face simultaneously, offering dramatic results without surgery.

How Can I Find an Expert Injector for Botox and Fillers?

Injectables are generally safe and effective. However, it is still important to seek out a highly qualified provider, preferably a medical professional like a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon. Your injector should have the correct credentials and training, as well as experience with patients of various ages, skin types, genders and facial structures. For optimal results, your injector must demonstrate an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy and an exceptional level of cosmetic artistry.

What Is Your Approach to Facial Enhancement With Injectables?

Our preference is for a subtle improvement. We believe your face shouldn’t look like a mask or an Instagram filter. The goal is to look better, but in a way that suits your age and doesn’t erase your individuality — in other words, no frozen faces, duck lips or overfilled cheeks.

Dr. Haywood focuses on providing soft, natural-looking improvements that complement your unique facial aesthetic. She will begin your injectable treatment with a comprehensive assessment of your skin texture, skin quality, volume loss and underlying facial structure. After this assessment, she will design a detailed treatment plan tailored to your needs and aesthetic goals.
