Rejuvenate the Face and Neck with a Facelift at Brampton Plastic Surgery.

Your face is the first thing people see when they look at you, but it's also where the signs of aging become the most noticeable. Even with a stellar skin care routine, the effects of time, gravity, and sun exposure take a toll, aging the delicate areas of the mid and lower face. Coupled with the natural loss of collagen and other structural proteins that occurs as we get older, keeping the skin smooth and supple can seem impossible.

If this sounds familiar, then Dr. Catherine Haywood at Brampton Plastic Surgery can help. As a board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience helping patients in Toronto, Brampton and southern Ontario look and feel their best, Dr. Haywood can restore a youthful, timeless appearance with facelift surgery.

What is Facelift Surgery?

The facelift (or rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic surgery that can effectively turn back the clock on aging. It works by lifting and tightening mature skin on the face and neck and gently pulling it upward to correct the appearance of wrinkles, folds or sagging. During surgery, excess skin is removed and redraped over the underlying tissues, which are repositioned and sculpted into a more youthful shape. The overall effect improves your facial tone and contours, resulting in fewer lines and wrinkles around the nose, cheeks, neck and jawline.

While a facelift effectively reverses the signs of aging in the lower face and neck, it cannot eliminate all facial wrinkles or folds. Some lines are etched into the muscles due to repetitive movements (smiling, squinting, frowning, etc.) throughout the years, but these can be smoothed out with Botox® injections. The wrinkles frequently found around the lips are also not affected by a facelift, but Dr. Haywood can recommend additional treatments to address these concerns and help you achieve the balanced, comprehensive results you want.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

Because the face is such a visible area, many patients worry about how long it will take to look presentable after surgery. The face cannot be hidden under clothing, so this is an understandable concern. While some swelling and bruising are expected in the early days of recovery, most patients feel comfortable going back to work and resuming their normal daily routine after a couple of weeks. You should feel fully recovered a month or so after your surgery.

As bruising and swelling continue to decrease, your full facelift results will develop and become more apparent in the weeks following your procedure. Facelift surgery effectively "turns back the clock" on aging and you should expect to notice smoother, tighter and more youthful-looking skin in treated areas. While not even a facelift can halt the aging process, you'll be able to enjoy your results for years to come, especially if you maintain healthy lifestyle habits and a good skin care routine. Proper sun protection is also key to ensuring a long-term outcome.

What is Recovery Like After a Facelift?

Immediately after surgery, you can expect mild discomfort and bruising in treated areas. Some oozing and swelling are also common in the first week of recovery. These side effects are normal and should diminish as your body begins to heal but can be managed in the meantime with rest, elevation and medication. If dressings or surgical drains are used to aid in the healing process, these can usually be removed shortly after the procedure.

While you're recovering, it's important to be careful when cleaning or washing your face, especially around the incision sites. You'll want to use gentle products and avoid wearing makeup in the first few days after your procedure to avoid irritating the area. Dr. Haywood can recommend specific formulas or brands to use during this time and advise you when it's okay to begin introducing cosmetics back into your daily routine. To ensure a smooth recovery, she will also send you home with detailed aftercare instructions and be available to address any questions that come up in between your follow-up appointments.

What To Expect From Your Facelift Procedure

Before your facelift surgery, Dr. Haywood will evaluate your concerns and measure the amount of sagging, volume loss and wrinkling that has occurred on the face and neck. Each patient's facial anatomy is unique, and this assessment will help the doctor determine the best approach for achieving your cosmetic goals. Dr. Haywood will also describe the surgical process in detail and answer any questions or concerns you may have before proceeding.

The surgical procedure itself is done on an outpatient basis ("day surgery") under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your personal needs and preferences. No matter which you choose, great care will be taken to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Because it can take time for the effects of sedation or anesthesia to wear off, you'll need to arrange for transportation home after surgery to ensure you get there safely.

There are a number of different facelift techniques available for rejuvenating the mid-to-lower face and neck, so the specifics of your procedure will vary depending on which is used. Still, facelift surgery usually involves an incision that starts at the temple and goes along the ear's natural skin crease, moving up behind the earlobe backward and into the hairline or scalp. Although there will be some scarring, incisions are strategically placed to reduce visibility and will blend in with the natural contours of your face once healed.

Dr. Haywood will access the internal structures of your face through these incisions, lifting, tightening and repositioning the underlying muscle and tissue to rejuvenate your appearance. Depending on your goals, she can also sculpt and redistribute fat in certain areas to correct any volume loss that has occurred. To finish the procedure, Dr. Haywood will trim and redrape the skin over your newly lifted contours before closing the incisions. As a highly-trained plastic surgeon, you can feel confident that Dr. Haywood's skill and expertise will produce beautiful results that enhance and complement your facial structure, helping you recapture a natural and youthful-looking appearance.

Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?

A facelift is suitable for both men and women and has become the top choice for those wanting to reverse the signs of aging in the face and neck. Compared to nonsurgical techniques, a facelift can dramatically transform your appearance with beautiful, natural-looking results that will keep others wondering what your secret is. While most patients interested in a facelift are at least 40 years old, there is no minimum age requirement — anyone who is worried about looking older than they feel can benefit from this procedure. If you're looking for an effective and long-lasting solution to minimize the following concerns in the mid-to-lower face and neck, then a facelift may be right for you.

  • Moderate to severe lines or wrinkles
  • Loose or sagging skin in the face and neck
  • Marionette lines, nasolabial folds or deep creases
  • Loss of volume or sunken appearance in the cheeks and midface
  • Excess fat or skin that forms a double neck

Those considering a facelift should be in good general health with no underlying conditions that could affect the outcome of the procedure. Having realistic goals or expectations is also important. Ideally, candidates should be non-smokers or ready to quit prior to surgery to avoid potential complications and promote a quick recovery.

Ultimately, a personal consultation with Dr. Haywood will be needed to determine if you are a good candidate for facelift surgery. During this time, your aesthetic goals will be discussed and the doctor will explain the risks of the procedure so you feel comfortable and confident going forward. If a facelift is right for you, Dr. Haywood will develop a customized surgical plan tailored to your needs to ensure an optimal outcome

Can a Facelift Be Combined With Other Procedures?

On its own, facelift surgery can provide dramatic results that erase the signs of aging in the mid-to-lower face. But if you have other concerns that a facelift can't address, you can combine your procedure with other treatments to ensure comprehensive rejuvenation of the face and a balanced, natural-looking outcome.

If you notice the signs of aging around the eyes or are bothered by sagging, puffiness or loose skin in this area, you can combine your facelift with an eye lift to further enhance your appearance and reach your cosmetic goals. An eye lift can be tailored to your specific needs and address concerns that affect both the upper and lower lids, giving you a more alert, refreshed and youthful look that will complement your facelift results.

You can also combine your facelift surgery with injectable treatments like Botox®, which can eliminate dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movements. While Botox® is a temporary solution for anti-aging, it can target lines in the upper face or brows for a fully rejuvenated appearance. Botox® injections in other areas can also prevent wrinkles from returning and prolong the results of your facelift.

Depending on your needs and aesthetic goals, Dr. Haywood may recommend other procedures or products to combine with your facelift surgery, including liposuction of the chin, dermal fillers and medical-grade skin care solutions. These options may help you reach your aesthetic goals when included in your personalized treatment plan, but this can be discussed in more detail during the consultation process.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

Your surgical plan will be tailored to meet your specific needs, so the cost of your facelift may vary depending on these individualized factors. A consultation with Dr. Haywood can help you get a better idea of the expenses associated with your procedure, but we’ve provided a cost estimate to help you better plan for your surgery. If you’re combining procedures and having an eye lift or other cosmetic treatment done at the same time, keep in mind that the overall cost will be higher, but you’ll save money on anesthesia and hospital fees. There are other benefits to combining procedures as well, including a single operation and recovery period, but Dr. Haywood can discuss this in more detail during your consultation.
