Upon carrying new skincare products came the need for new knowledge. In conclusion to the extensive webinars, articles and even self trials I can say that I have finally come to a basic conclusion: there is one condition to blame for everything from zits to wrinkles, and most women don’t even know they’re suffering from it, and that is an out of whack PH level.

It turns out, our skin functions and actually looks its best in a middle ground. Throw off its PH levels by eating the wrong foods or using the wrong products and your dermis (skin) will let you know it’s not happy i.e. inflammation, extreme sensitivity, acne.

My first question upon learning about skin care, and possibly one you may have as well: what the heck is a PH level? PH stands for “potential Hydrogen” and is used to describe the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance, which ranges from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). Next question, why does this mean anything to me in regards to my skin? Well, the health of your body and skin is directly linked to maintaining the right balance between acidity and alkalinity.

In the most basic of senses to wrap this all up: to work its best, the skins barrier should be slightly acidic at a 5.5 PH balance. When it’s too alkaline the skin becomes dry and sensitive i.e. eczema. You may even experience inflammation, which then affects the skins ability to ward of the enzymes that destroy collagen and causes wrinkles and sagging. When it is the opposite, which is rarer for skin to be overly acidic, the result are often angry breakouts. When the skin deviates too far south of that magical 5.5 number, it is also stripped down to the point of being red, inflamed and painful to touch. Therefore, the key is to maintain a balance, like everything else in life.
